About Warrior Institute
Warrior Institute programs consist of an innovative combination of recreational therapy and biofeedback training. Our recreational programs include primarily outdoor activities and other fitness based opportunities that help improve the physical and mental health and well-being of program participants. Some of these activities include: kayaking, canoeing, hiking, biking, swimming and camping with our local community.
Biofeedback training is a training component that we facilitate during the various recreational programs. Biofeedback training is a simple method that helps individuals learn to control emotional and physical reactions to stress and anxiety. The biofeedback equipment we use is portable and waterproof and can be facilitated anywhere. We frequently train in parks, on riverbanks and other outdoor settings, whereas standard biofeedback training is typically facilitated in a sterile office setting.
During training, participants attach a simple (although technologically advanced) ear-clip to their earlobe which is connected to a small laptop that measures their heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is an indicator of the balance of the nervous system, and the program gives information about the state of an individual’s health. What is so effective with including biofeedback in our programs is that individuals can actually see the strength of their nervous system in real time on the computer screen. Using the visual feedback and practicing a paced breathing technique, participants are introduced to the concept of training their body to go into a healthier or stronger zone in which symptoms associated with stress, anxiety and PTSD can be better managed. At the end of the 5-15 minute training sessions, the software provides a report and participants can actually see improvements in their health over time.
Warrior Institute currently has three different levels of programs:
1) Day long recreational excursions with introduction to biofeedback training
2) Week long paddle trips with introduction to biofeedback training
3) Individualized training programs in which veterans work one-on-one with our specialists and are introduced to various physical training programs, recreational opportunities and biofeedback training.
EligibilityWarrior Institute facilitates various day trips that are open to any veteran. Our multi-day paddle trips are typically for veterans with PTSD and/or TBI AND their partner/spouse/care-giver.
