Member Spotlight: Warriors On Cataract

Warriors On Cataract is a young and small, but passionate and growing nonprofit funded by corporations and individuals. Their 501(c)3 nonprofit status is obtained by partnering with Outdoor Buddies.

Warriors On Cataract sponsors four day whitewater trips on the Colorado River through Canyonlands National Park from Moab to Lake Powell for our disabled veterans.  They assist approximately 25 Wounded Warriors, their caregivers and families on each trip.

Warriors On Cataract find that whitewater trips are a watershed for many of the Wounded Warrior participants, giving them new hope and perspective, and forming a support group of other combat veterans, thus putting them on a path to recovery and reintegration. They accommodate veterans with various levels of disability, such as severe PTSD, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic injuries, multiple amputations, burns, depression, substance abuse, and those with wheel chairs and service dogs.

The mission of Warriors On Cataract is to aid in reintegrating our wounded warriors back into civilian life and to show them appreciation for their service to our country. They offer a venue where they can communicate and share experiences with other warriors and show their support as well.

Through these trips, warriors gain a long-lasting camaraderie and connection to other wounded warriors and essentially aid in their healing and reintegration. Warriors On Cataract helps raise public awareness of the challenges and sacrifices that our wounded warriors have made and will continue to inspire and join in the fight to help rehabilitate and reintegrate these wounded warriors.

“The most amazing aspect of the Warriors on Cataract trips is watching the veterans both young and old bonding over shared experiences and wounds, all the while absorbing the awe of the river. The healing process during this trip is absolutely amazing. They build new friendships and work through personal demons without modern medicine or therapists. Nature, the river, is the healer.”

The 2017 Warriors on Cataract Canyonlands National Park Colorado River whitewater trips for disabled veterans are now on the calendar and open for sign-ups. These trips are conducted by Tag-a-Long Commercial River Expedition outfitter, and go from Moab Utah to the upper reaches of Lake Powell. Expenses are covered once the warrior gets to Moab, including motel and meals before and after the river trip.

Some upcoming launch dates are as follows:

May 12 – USAF Special Operations soldiers and 2nd Battalion 7th Regiment Marines and Royal British Marines

May 19 – Salt Lake VA Veterans and others

May 26 – Cheyenne VA Veterans and others
