A powerful video about the challenges of returning to civilian life, and the journey our HG participants go through to acclimate and reconnect within their communities and personal relationships.
Higher Ground Sun Valley is a positive and visible fixture in the adaptive sports industry, offering programs that give individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience recreation and the outdoors without limitations.
Designed and executed by a staff of certified therapists and professionals, each program assists participants in building physical and social skills they can use for a lifetime. Enhancing quality of life through inclusive therapeutic recreation and education for people of all abilities is the mission. While focusing on innovative and sustainable therapeutic impact, they can ensure a positive change the participants’ experience that will translate to every aspect of their lives.
Established as a 501(c)3 in 1999, Higher Ground’s programming has increased each year, while remaining focused on their goal of improving the lives of people with disabilities through sports and recreation. Whether serving local children or providing unique camps for our nation’s injured service members, Higher Ground participants are able to experience snow sports, rafting, water sports and fly fishing at their highest possible level of independence.
Higher Ground offers week-long military camps in the serene mountains of Idaho, which marks the beginning of their commitment to the veterans they serve. They also host 13 week-long sports camps annually, which are offered completely free of charge to veterans and their supporters. Camps serve eight to 10 participants and are designed for specific populations—couples, men, and women. Creating an intimate atmosphere, participants will be able to connect and share struggles related to battle trauma and injuries, while supporters share challenges about health care, parenting, and their role as caregivers.
Higher Ground commits to three years of follow-up care for each participant, helping to connect them to local resources and allocating a reintegration budget for each participant to help them achieve and sustain their individual goals as they reintegrate as a valuable member of society.
